Efficient Kitchen Planning Guide

When you are a busy working mother, navigating between the demands of your children, your job, and the housework, every moment of your time is precious. You don’t always have those few minutes needed to wipe down cupboard doors, clean the shelves of your fridge, or put away the shopping. Strange though it sounds, at the end of the day, if you are exhausted from your day job, your baby is crying, and you have to get to your computer because your night-time online job is waiting for you, those few minutes do not always exist.

For this reason, you have to stop thinking of housework as being an extraneous activity that is outside the scope of everything else that you do. It is every bit as important as the work you are doing, because the money you earn is going into your home, and your home needs to be a settled, organized place.

So why not treat your housework like your job, and just as you manage to schedule a business meeting, major assignment, or project, you can also schedule the jobs you need to do around the house. And as the kitchen is one of the most important places that needs to kept clean, let’s start by building up an efficient kitchen planning guide to help you look after it.

1. Get yourself a planner’s diary, like you do for work.

2. Build yourself an efficient schedule, working out a specific date and time, and write down the following tasks:

- Every two weeks, clean out the shelves in the fridge.
- Similarly, unless they are very dirty, every two weeks, wash down the doors of your kitchen cabinets.
- Once a week, do out at least one of the cupboards, throwing out things you don’t need and reorganizing storage space. If you find that space is a problem, start thinking of more creative kitchen storage solutions. If you are so much in touch with what is going on inside your cabinets, this will become easier than you think.

3. Apart from these jobs, you need to note down on your daily planner the tasks that have to be done on a daily basis. Make specific times for yourself. If you cannot stick to a definite hour, then at least make a schedule (e.g. once the kids have eaten lunch, but before you make supper) to get these tasks done by the end of the day. These jobs include:

- Washing all of the dishes from that day
- Cleaning down your countertops
- Sweeping the kitchen floor
- Throwing out the garbage and replacing the bag

Making sure that these few, simple tasks are done every day will do a lot to maintain hygiene and basic cleanliness in your home.

Scheduling these tasks in this manner is not always so easy, and at first it takes time to get used it. Obviously, a certain amount of flexibility is also necessary, but with enough self-discipline, you should be able to get used to it and your home will be a much better place.
